Meachum
In 1847, Missouri banned education for Black people. John Berry Meachum, a Baptist minister, operated a school in the basement of his church in St. Louis. He then created the Floating Freedom School, a steamboat that he furnished with a library in classrooms. He founded the first black church west of the Mississippi, and was an active conductor on the underground railroad between Kentucky and Missouri.
Meachum is constructed and dressed in recycled wool suiting. He stands approximately 9 inches tall.
