Annie
Annie Edson Taylor was an American school teacher known as the first person to survive a trip over the Niagara Falls in a barrel. The Queen of the Mist was widowed soon after marriage and took a series of teaching jobs from Michigan to Mexico City before returning to the US. By 1900, at age 62, she had lost her home to a fire and her money to swindling clergyman. She lied about her age, claiming to be 40, in hopes of making a living more easily. The Niagara Falls stunt was an attempt to secure her financial future. Her custom made barrel was padded with a mattress and pumped full of air with a bicycle pump. She sent a house cat over the falls in it as a test run. When the cat survived, she deemed it safe for herself. She made the trip in less than 20 minutes. She wrote a memoir, but was once again swindled of her earnings from the stunt by a series of managers and died penniless at the age of 82 (though she claimed to be 57).
Annie is constructed or recycled wool. She wears a vintage handkerchief. She stands approximately 12” tall.
