


Cardis
Cardis Collins served in the US House of Representatives from 1973-1997, representing the state of Illinois. She was initially elected to this position in a special election to replace her husband, who was killed in a plane crash one month after being re-elected. Throughout her career as a representative, she was a champion for women’s health and welfare issues. She pushed for universal healthcare insurance and gender equity in college sports. She was instrumental in Medicare’s revision of coverage to include post mastectomy prostheses, as these were previously considered solely cosmetic. She wrote legislation to ensure that Medicare cover mammograms for women over the age of 34. She also raised breast cancer awareness by writing legislation to declare October the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She was elected to 12 consecutive terms and is one of the longest serving women of color in the House of Representatives. She declined to run for a 13th term, citing her age.
Cardis is constructed of recycled wool and wears a vintage handkerchief. She stands approximately 13” tall.
