Ephraim
Ephraim McDowell was the most distinguished surgeon west of the Allegheny Mountains in the early 1800’s. His medical practice was based in Danville, KY, where he also served as postmaster for Kentucky’s first post office while he built his practice. At the time, ovarian tumors were fatal and death was terribly painful. He performed the first surgery to remove an ovarian tumor for a Mrs. Crawford of Green County. This made medical history and paved the way for successful treatment of other women in American and Great Britain. It is noted that his medical success was not immediately recognized, as Dr. McDowell hated to write case notes. His successful surgery for Mrs. Crawford was not documented until nearly eight years later. Ironically, she outlived him by at least ten years.
Ephraim stands approximately 10 inches tall. He is constructed of recycled cashmere, dressed in corduroy and cotton, and stuffed with recycled denim.
