Gordon Parks was a photographer, composer, writer, and filmmaker. His photojournalism, commissioned by the federal government and published in LIFE magazine, focused on civil rights, poverty, and African-Americans. He was the first black American to direct films in Hollywood. The Sesame Street character, Gordon, is named for him.
