Joan Trumpauer Mulholland is a civil rights activist who was first active in the 60’s. As a Duke University student, she participated in her first “sit in.” She was taken for psychological testing, as they could not understand why a white woman would want civil rights. She was a Freedom Rider and spent time in Parchman Penitentiary for her involvement in civil rights protests. Upon her release, she enrolled at Tougaloo College as an act of reverse integration. After retiring from teaching, she began the Joan Trumpauer Mulholland Foundation, which focuses on educating young people about the Civil Rights Movement and the value of activism.
Joan is constructed of recycled wool and wears a vintage handkerchief skirt. She stands approximately 12” tall.
