Judith Heumann was a disability rights activist, known as “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement.”  She contracted polio as a toddler and used a wheelchair for most of her life. As a child and later as a teacher, she was denied access to public education as she was deemed a “fire hazard” because of her wheelchair. In both situations, she and her family challenged the NYC school system and eventually won. Among many other accomplishments, she went on to be instrumental in the development of the Individuals with Disabilities Act and organized a sit in to advocate for Section 504 law.

Judith is constructed of recycled wool and wears a vintage handkerchief top. She is stuffed with recycled denim and stands approximately 12” tall.
