Martha Ann Ricks was born into slavery in Tennessee and freed by her father. She emigrated with her family to Liberia when she was 13. She became very interested in Queen Victoria and set her sites on traveling to England to meet her. She created the “Liberian Coffee Tree Quilt” over the course of 20 years. In 1892, she was invited to dine with the Queen, where she presented her with the quilt.
