Paul
Frankfort native, Paul Sawyier, studied art privately as a child and went on to study at the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he supported himself with portraits in crayon. While selling hemp for the Kentucky River Mill, he discovered his love for painting river and landscape scenes around Frankfort. He continued his art studies with William Merritt Chase in New York and Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati, before returning to Kentucky. He bought a houseboat which he used as a home and studio, painting views along the Kentucky River and its tributaries. He moved to Brooklyn to live with his sister and made his living taking commissions from art dealers there. He died in New York in 1917, but his remains were moved to his Frankfort home in 1923.
Paul is constructed of recycled wool, dressed in recycled cotton and corduroy, and stuffed with denim. He stands approximately 13” tall.
