Pauline

Pauline Baynes was an English illustrator, author and commercial artist. As a child, art was her favorite subject “because it was easy.”  She attended various art schools but never earned a degree.  During WWII, she and her sister joined the Women’s Voluntary Service. There she spent her time making maps and marine charts for the Royal Navy, a skill she would draw upon to create maps of Lewis’s Narnia and Tolkien’s Middle-earth.  She was recommended to Lewis by a local bookshop owner. At his request, she illustrated all six installations of the “Chronicles of Narnia.” While royalties from this could have set her up for life, she lacked business acumen. She charged only 100 pounds per book. 

Pauline is constructed of recycled wool and wears a vintage handkerchief.  She stands approximately 12 inches tall.
