Stephen F. Whitman opened a confectionary in Philadelphia in 1842.  He introduced the first prepackaged candy with his box of sugar plums. The Whitman’s Sampler was first marketed in 1912, and was notable for the first use of cellophane in the candy industry.  In 1991, Whitman’s Candies became a fixture in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
